I saw this article about how girls today view sex and couldn't help feeling a little sick to my stomach. As the mother of 3 little girls it frightens me to think that any of them would grow up not valuing the sacredness of their bodies. I am not going to tell you that I have all the answers but here are 3 tips to build your daughter's self-esteem before she needs to make a decision about sex.
1. Focus on her strengths and talents NOT her looks.
2. Spend time together doing fun things.
3. Allow her to communicate with you with out judging her. Show her that you can be trusted and that she can come to you with any questions.
The truth is that you can love her more than life itself, but if she doesn't love herself she may make decisions that she'll regret in the future.
One book that I really like about this topic is Molly Tops Teen Guide to Love, Sex and No Regrets. You can buy it here.
If you have a preteen I would recommend reading this book and then sharing it with them. It is not about abstaining from sex, but it takes an honest look at sex and the things to consider when making the decision to take your clothes off.
I know this is a tough topic, but no one said parenting was easy right?
